Rattling developments are made in mesh technology. The target is a biological mesh, which can directly be produced from human or animal tissue and not cause any tissue reaction. These meshes, already produced and utilized, are unfortunately very expensive. I hope that they will decrease to the level of the existing used meshes and utilized at any hernia case in a couple of years.

Except biological meshes, dual layer or composite meshes are used at very large abdominal wall scars since a couple of years. These meshes provide us, the physicians, a great easiness and security at huge abdominal hernias, at which we had no chance previously.

The spread of utilization of laparoscopy, its usage at hernia surgeries, constituted another turn-point of the hernia surgery. Thanks to laparoscopy large operations can be performed with the least tissue damage and there is the chance to discharge the patient without the need to keep him stationary.

Absorbable screws, which are used at laparoscopy, self adhesive seamless meshes, used at open operations, are the developments of the last years and are used at our centre continuously.
