Composite meshes are also known as dual layer meshes. The reason for that each side is manufactured out of different materials is that one side gets in contact with the intestine inside the abdomen.
Single sided meshes are used much more and often, but when the structure of these should get in contact with the intestine, they harm the intestine. As it is not necessary to enter the abdomen in most of the hernia surgeries, the placed meshes do not need to get in contact with the intestine. Whereby the mesh is placed inside the abdomen at very large incisional hernias and laparoscopic realized inginual and incisional hernias. Therefore, as the upper side is in the structure of normal mesh, the lower side is covered with a thin film layer such to prevent an adhession on the intestine. That’s why these are called “dual layer” or “composite” meshes.
By the composite meshes it is possible to repair huge hernias, which were previously not possible to repair or had a great re-incur risk. The only weak aspect of these meshes is the high cost. Depending on their sizes and diameters, they have prices between 1.500 TL to 2.500 TL.
