THE OPEN METHOD PDF Print E-mail

At the open method, or the so called classical method, a cut of 7-8cm is made to the area of the hernia. The scar in the abdominal wall is reached and the organs, protruded here towards outside are pushed into the abdomen and placed to their normal locations. Depending on the size of the scar, a mesh of the adequate size is placed on the abdominal wall directly behind the muscles. The mesh is placed behind the fascia, which is a strong layer, on the muscle layer (ONLAY). This area is so reinforced such that it will not open due to a pressure from inside.

Advantages of the Open Method:

* It is not necessary to give a general anaesthesia to the patient, it may be performed by any type of anaesthesia: local anaesthesia, spinal/epidural anaesthesia or general anaesthesia. The flexibility at the anaesthesia provides the possibility to operate any hernia patient.

* The open surgery is 30% cheaper than the Closed Method. Beside its cost advantage, it has the easiness of applicability at any hospital. The reason is that it does not need expensive investments.

* It can be applied by any surgeon, it does not need a special surgical professionalism or experience. It can be easily applied anywhere in the country.

The re-incur ratio of both the Open and the Closed Method is the same and very low (0.5%).

The great majority of the patient can turn back home after the operation on the same day.

The open surgery may be preferred at single-side hernias, at persons with not high motivation to turn back to work or pensioned ones, in cases in which the cost factor is important. Beside this, also at persons, to whom a general anaesthesia can not be applied, the open method is used.
