INCISIONAL HERNIA PDF Print E-mail

These are hernias, which incur at the incision location at patients which had a surgery before. They may incur in early terms and late terms after the surgery. Faulty selection of the material used at the surgery, reasons due to the patient  (diabetes, anemia, chronic heart disease, chronic lung disease, false diet, systemic diseases like cancer) and faults of surgical techniques are the reasons of the incur of incisional hernia.

incisionalherniaIncisional hernias may reach very large sizes: whilst depending on the rip in the abdominal wall, these are technically the most difficult hernias. The reason of the difficulty is that at very large hernias, e.g. at abdominal rips with a diameter up to 15-20cm, it may be impossible to place both sides of the diaphragm and to sew. In this case composite meshes can be used. Composite meshes are double layered. One surface of these meshes are covered with a special layer which prevents the adhession to the intestine. When the mesh is placed such that this surface looks towards inside, a successful repair may be achieved. That these meshes are secure and their tissue-friendly structures are their advantages, but their high costs are their disadvantages. These meshes, called “Dual Layer” or “Composite Graft” have prices between 1.500 TL to 2.500 TL, depending on their size and form.

Incisional hernias are repaired by the open and the closed method. At all hernias, repaired with the closed method, composite meshes are used. If they should be repaired with the open method, simple meshes are used at small diameter hernias, but at large size hernias composite meshes are used.
