Umbilical hernias protrude through the navel and may have a size between a hazelnut and an orange. The opening, at which the hernia protruded, is the place where the umbilical cord, which provides the blood flow while the embryo is in the uterus, enters the abdominal wall. Therefore, also umbilical hernias are such which protrude though a "congenital weak location".
Umbilical hernia is more often seen at women and are most often detected by the patient after the pregnancy. Umbilical hernias may be operated both by the open and the closed method. At very tiny umbilical hernias does the closed method not constitute an important advantage, but the closed method may be easier and more comfortable for the patient at large umbilical hernias.
